What to Do and Not to Do After a Car Accident

Here is a list of Do’s and Dont’s:
Do
1. Get prompt medical attention so you can have the best chances at recovery and also medical proof that the accident caused your injuries.
2. Consider contacting a Maryland auto accident attorney for a free consultation. At attorney could help guide you through the steps to build your case. Also, if you plan to hire an attorney, do not speak with the insurance company until you have consulted with your attorney.
3. Have someone else call the other driver’s insurance company for you. Since you do not want to give the other insurance company a recorded statement, it is best to simply not speak with them at all. If you have an attorney, they will do this for you so you can obtain the claim number and insurance adjuster’s information.
4. Allow the insurance company to take your car to a lot or repair shop and give you a rental while your car is appraised or repaired.
5. Take photos of your vehicle if you did not at the scene.
6. File for your PIP benefits in writing.
7. When talking to the insurance company, keep your conversation brief, avoid chit-chat, and tell the adjuster what part of your body hurts and that you would like to see a doctor.
Don’t
1. Settle with the insurance company before you know the full extent of your injury and suffering. An attorney may be helpful in determining how much you deserve for your injuries.
2. Admit fault or freely discuss matters of the accident that could show you were even 1% responsible for the accident.
3. Give the insurance company a medical release to obtain your records.
