Attorney Lundin explains that PIP is the acronym for Personal Injury Protection. PIP is a segment of your insurance policy that is required by Maryland State Law for most vehicles; it is included to protect you in the case of an injury. If you were driving a car and involved in an accident, your own PIP insurance coverage can cover medical bills, lost wages, and certain other expenses up to the amount of the coverage you purchased. If you were a pedestrian or bicyclist who was struck by a vehicle, the car driver’s PIP coverage is responsible for your bills.
PIP coverage is additional funding that is completely independent of your claim against an at-fault driver. In other words, PIP will pay a certain amount to you, and the other driver cannot lessen the amount owed to you if PIP has given you any money. Your personal claim against the other driver does not take PIP payments into consideration.
PIP covers medical bills, up to 85% of lost wages, and various other personal expenses.
